How to drive Stepper Motor drive


The Stepper Motor Chopper Driver is a Bipolar Stepper Motor Drive with easily adjustable current control up to 2A, based on the SGS-Thompson L297 and L298 stepper motor controller and driver ICís.

Stepper motors are rated by current and and not by voltage. A chopper driver because it is switching on and off current allows a set current to be fed to the coils and not be dependent on the voltage of the power supply. The Chopper Driver also allows for the use of higher voltage power supplies (up to 24V) to overcome the effects of the inductance of the coils giving better performance and a higher top speed

Initial Setup

  • Connect the power supply negative wire to a - terminal and positive wire to the + terminal. ( 12volts - 24 Volts )
  • Connect the Signal wires thru DB9 Femal connecter
  • Use DB9 male connecter to interface
  • pin 1- Clock is used to Control Speed Send Pulse in 100ms on 100ms off for Normal Speed
  • Pin 2 - Direction High - forward --- Low reverse Direction
  • Pin 3 - Enable - Connect high 5volts - To Enable Drive
  • Pin 4 - 5 Volts o/p
  • Pin 5 - Half/ full Step - High - half step --------- low - Full Step
  • Pin 7 - Home - Dont Connect
  • Pin 9 - Ground - Connect Common Ground to Controller Board
  • Pin 6 - 8 - Not connected
  • DIP switch used to Control Current flow - 0A - 1A - 1.5A - 2A



Steppin Drive is Rdy to use generates all the signals based on PIC 16f72
